Anita Saarkessian

Anita Sarkeesian was born in Canada and raised in the United States. She has worked as media critic since. She founded Feminist Frequency a website that hosts videos and commentary analyzing depictions of women's roles in popular culture. Anita Sarkeesian has been a journalist, media critic and award-winning feminist for over 10 years. Feminist Frequency is an educational site for non-profit organizations that investigates representations of women in narratives from popular culture. In addition, she works to expose the issues surrounding sexual harassment and attack on women and others of minority groups in the online world, she is determined to break down the stigmas and stereotypes in the popular culture. Sarkeesian is also a graduate of York University master's in social philosophy, political and philosophical thinking. Apart from being an acclaimed public speaker, she has given presentations at TEDxWomen The XOXO Conference as well as the United Nations Broadband Working Group. From an early age she was intrigued with gender issues and feminist thought. When she was still in school, in 2009, she created her Feminist Frequency website. The ambitious lady planned to launch a web series on the gender roles in video games and found herself the target of an online harassment campaign. The attack did not stop her, but instead strengthened her resolve as feminist media critic. In recognition of the many accomplishments she's made to feminist movements, she has been the recipient of numerous awards. Anita Sarkeesian has been a media critic for several years and was the creator of Feminist Frequency. This educational nonprofit explores women's representations within the popular culture stories.
